The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Aviation

            Much ink, keystrokes, and public debate have been devoted in recent years to the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in many forms of human endeavor. Not surprisingly, the field of aviation has been a ripe filed for the application of AI. This paper offers a cursory overview of the role of the Federal Government and, in particular, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the research, development, and application of AI tools for aviation programs and activities and the current and planned use of AI by the aviation industry.
